Elements of Success for Extension in the Western Region

The Western Regional Program Leadership Committee (WRPLC) is a committee of the Western Extension Directors Association http://extension.oregonstate.edu/weda/. Extension Program representatives from each of the Western Region States and U.S.-affiliated Territories (Montana, Wyoming, Washington, Idaho, Oregon, Alaska, California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Hawai‘i, the Territory of American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Micronesia (Republic of Palau, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands), and the Territory of Guam) work to identify and provide leadership for advancing multi-state programs as well as to identify operational and organizational issues of importance to Extension in the West.

Extension work and success relies on a strong connection and engagement with communities. For example, those new to Extension may need more structured mentoring to understand these relationships and how to nurture them over their career for the most efficient and effective Extension education. The Western Region Program Leaders Committee (WRPLC), a committee appointed by the Western Extension Directors Association (WEDA), has developed some online resources for new employees that cover many areas central to Extension work such as history of Extension, being accountable to our funders, needs assessment, program assessment & evaluation, documenting and sharing impacts, adult education, Extension scholarship etc. These resources have elements that are common across the west and will complement each State’s efforts in providing a strategic orientation for new (and even seasoned) Extension educators.

These online resources provide easy-to-use tools for Extension Educators on what it means and what it takes to work for Extension. WRPLC encourages those using these modules to develop a series of questions to ask their mentors, regional directors, department heads and program leaders on how these trainings apply to their particular program or State. To continually improve on the content offered, WRPLC seeks input and feedback on the survey link (module evaluation) prominently displayed under each module.”
